These handmade objects frequently display slight irregularities. The glaze might be uneven; stitching could vary; shapes are not always perfectly symmetrical. Factories typically categorise such differences as defects. However, these very imperfections often make an item cherished.
This concept resurfaced for Wrobel after reading a recent article. It discussed younger generations embracing traditional crafts. Examples included bookbinding, metalwork, and boatbuilding. These skills currently offer a perceived shield from AI automation.
Demand for apprenticeships in these fields is robust. For instance, one London metalworking firm received over 160 applications for just two positions. This demonstrates significant interest in human-centric trades.
However, the true intrigue may not simply lie in AI-proofing crafts. That perspective seems overly simplistic. Machines and robotics are constantly advancing. Therefore, the boundary between what can and cannot be automated remains fluid.
A deeper question emerges: why do handmade items feel more valuable? This occurs even when they are not technically superior. Historically, we have long strived to eliminate variation in manufacturing.
Industrial progress depended on consistent, identical production. The goal was quality, scale, and efficiency. Management mirrored this logic, standardising processes and reducing errors. This pursuit of predictability has had many benefits.
Certainly, precision is vital in many areas. Aircraft components, for example, require exact specifications. Personal flourishes by a worker would be inappropriate there. Yet, we may have over-equated consistency with quality. This applies even to things where uniformity was never the primary purpose.
AI intensifies this challenge. It can polish text, correct images, and improve presentations quickly. Its output is often impressive and will only get better. We are rapidly approaching a world where producing flawless content is remarkably easy.
What then happens to the value of imperfection? This does not imply celebrating shoddy work. A poorly made chair, even handmade, holds no inherent merit. Craftsmanship, by contrast, demands skill, judgment, and patience.
Nevertheless, craftsmanship naturally incorporates variation. Perhaps this variation carries its own message. An object becomes unique: someone made it, somewhere, at a specific time. Its next iteration might differ slightly.

Much of this automation makes perfect sense. Machines can perform repetitive tasks faster and more accurately. Keeping people on such work offers no noble defence of humanity. However, future readiness is more than just knowing what to automate.
It increasingly means understanding what not to automate. This applies even when automation is technically feasible. Do customers truly want every interaction to sound identical? Should employee conversations always be perfectly scripted?
Does a hotel improve by having no surprises? Does a city become more engaging when its main street mirrors thousands of others? These questions extend to leadership communication as well.
If every message is polished, balanced, and algorithmically refined, distinguishing the speaker becomes difficult. A slight hesitation, an unusual word choice, or even an imperfect sentence reveals a human presence. These elements also convey information.
Therefore, declaring craftsmanship a winner against machines might be too simplistic. It is likely inaccurate. A more compelling possibility is that technology will compel us to define value more clearly. We must discern where true perfection adds value versus where it merely eradicates uniqueness.
Perhaps the slightly uneven souvenir from a trip inherently understands this. Its imperfection is not a drawback. Instead, it serves as evidence of its unique origin: that specific place, those hands, that particular creation process. In a world increasingly capable of flawless production, this distinction may hold greater importance than we currently realise.
