The Turkish Embassy in Vienna recently hosted a distinguished reception. This event marked “Zafer Bayramı,” also known as Turkish Victory Day, alongside Armed Forces Day for the Republic of Türkiye. Held on Monday, August 31, 2026, the celebration drew numerous high-ranking guests.
Many prominent figures from diplomatic, political, and business circles attended. Furthermore, key members of the Turkish community in Austria joined the festivities. H.E. Dr. Gürsel Dönmez, the Turkish Ambassador to Austria, and Military Attaché Colonel Murat Doğusoy extended the invitations.
The embassy building served as a significant setting for this international gathering. Attendees included military-diplomatic corps members and representatives from various Austrian government institutions. Renowned fashion designer Atıl Kutoğlu was present, as were Ayten Eler from the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Asiye Dönmez, the ambassador’s wife.
The ceremony commenced with an official message. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s address was read aloud to all guests. Following this, Ambassador Dr. Gürsel Dönmez and Colonel Murat Doğusoy delivered welcoming remarks. Both speakers highlighted the deep historical and ongoing significance of the occasion for Türkiye.
Zafer Bayramı remains one of Türkiye’s most crucial national holidays. It specifically commemorates the decisive victory of Turkish armed forces. Under the supreme command of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, these forces triumphed in the Battle of Dumlupınar on August 30, 1922.
This battle marked the climax of the Turkish Grand Offensive. Moreover, it proved a crucial turning point in the Turkish War of Independence. The defeat of the enemy’s main force in Anatolia paved the way for the war’s conclusion. Consequently, it laid the foundation for the Republic of Türkiye’s proclamation on October 29, 1923.
August 30 is traditionally dedicated to remembrance. It not only celebrates liberation but also honors the Turkish Armed Forces. Across Türkiye and Northern Cyprus, the day is marked with military parades, torchlight processions, concerts, and solemn ceremonies.
