Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker recently made a landmark visit to Warsaw. This trip marked the first time an Austrian chancellor visited the Polish capital in nearly two decades. The discussions significantly deepened Austria Poland cooperation across various crucial sectors.

Leaders primarily addressed European security, migration policy, and challenges from Russia’s war in Ukraine. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk underscored the visit’s symbolic and geopolitical importance. He referenced the historic Red Army attack on Poland in 1939, urging lessons from history.

Prime Minister Tusk reported a recent large-scale Russian attack near the Polish border in western Ukraine. This incident prompted Polish fighter jets to go on high alert. Chancellor Stocker promptly assured Poland of Austria’s full solidarity. He stressed that Russian attempts to destabilize EU members must not succeed. Furthermore, Austria, despite its military neutrality, pledges to boost European resilience.

Both governments agreed to gradually intensify economic relations. A new bilateral economic conference will convene every two years, chaired by economy ministers. Austria also announced a major infrastructure project.

Vienna plans to invest approximately €1 billion in expanding the Nordbahn railway. This expansion aims to cut train travel time between Vienna and Warsaw. The journey, currently eight hours, should eventually take just four. Chancellor Stocker’s delegation included top business leaders, recognizing Poland’s fast-growing economy. Peter Bosek, CEO of Erste Group, was among them. The banking group is expanding rapidly in Central Europe and toured Erste Bank Polska headquarters.

On migration, Stocker and Tusk called for a unified EU approach. Chancellor Stocker highlighted Poland’s key role as a border state and host of Frontex. He emphasized that external border protection is a shared EU responsibility, not just national.

Both leaders advocated for strict return policies for individuals required to leave the EU. Austria also pushes for return centers and asylum procedures in third countries. Stocker supported temporary suspension of asylum applications during border crises. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Tusk presented Poland’s “Eastern Shield” border fortification project. This initiative enhances security for the entire continent. Tusk affirmed that security decisions on the eastern flank necessitate Poland’s involvement.

Chancellor Stocker also urged EU reforms for competitiveness. He called for reduced bureaucracy and affordable energy supply. Stocker criticized the EU’s merit-order system in the electricity market. He believes it disadvantages countries with high renewable energy shares. Prime Minister Tusk noted that investments in the single market and border security benefit all EU members. Chancellor Stocker reiterated that security must be a priority in future EU budget talks. He concluded by inviting Prime Minister Tusk for a reciprocal visit to Vienna, furthering Austria Poland cooperation.
