Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has emphasized the critical importance of Poland Ukraine border security following a recently averted “direct threat” at a crossing point. The incident occurred on Wednesday night, prompting immediate warnings of further Russian-linked provocations.
Speaking after a Visegrád Group meeting in Bratislava on Thursday, Tusk revealed the threat was neutralized through effective cooperation. Polish and Ukrainian services worked together to prevent a serious incident. However, the prime minister did not disclose the specific nature of the threat or which of the 18 border crossings was targeted.
This development followed closely on another alarming event. Just a day prior, a Russian drone struck a border crossing between Ukraine and Moldova. That attack tragically killed two individuals and left several others wounded.
Tusk suggested the recent incident was merely a preview of future challenges. He stated that he had received a “fairly precise report” from the CIA concerning potential events in the upcoming months. Therefore, both Poland and wider Europe must prepare for various scenarios.
These scenarios extend beyond the immediate Russian-Ukrainian front. They also encompass potential issues along the European Union’s entire eastern flank. Tusk explicitly mentioned Russia’s previous “provocative attacks” on border crossings, citing the Moldova incident as an example. He anticipates similar actions against border crossings with Ukraine in other nations, including Poland.
In August, Tusk had already cautioned against escalating Russian aggression. Following a briefing with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, he stressed the increasing pace of this escalation. He also highlighted that enhanced air support for Ukraine remains “crucial for our security.”
The prime minister also declared that the next six months would be pivotal. He made it clear that provocations targeting NATO member states should not be dismissed. The focus remains on robust Poland Ukraine border security and broader regional stability.
